A robotic system installed at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS) has successfully trained both experienced and junior surgeons. Over a month of daily sessions, urologists, abdominal, thoracic, cardio-surgeons, and gynecologists gained substantial experience in this specialized minimally invasive technique.

Alongside the training, KCUS organized a dedicated symposium where a urological and an abdominal surgery were performed for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia. These operations were conducted under the supervision of global experts Professor Dr. Alexandre Mottrie and Dr. Jan Colpaert.

Improving patient care and clinical standards

The Acting Director General of KCUS, Prim. Doc. Dr. Alen Pilav, stated that the institution remains committed to supporting staff education.

"The 'robot' is not a replacement for a surgeon, but a modern tool that allows for greater precision, lower invasiveness, fewer complications, shorter recovery, and shorter hospitalization. KCUS has the capacity and the experts to introduce modern treatment methods when funds are invested in equipment and education rather than accumulated in accounts," Pilav noted.

Following their training, the team from the Clinic for Urology and Organ Transplantation, led by Professor Dr. Benjamin Kulovac, earned certifications in Istanbul. The team subsequently performed the first independent, robot-assisted laparoscopic urological surgeries at the center. All patients were discharged shortly after their procedures without complications.

Advancing regional medicine

The Director of Surgical Disciplines at KCUS, Professor Dr. Nermin Granov, highlighted the hospital's role in medical advancement, noting that their experienced surgeons adapted very quickly to the robot-assisted procedures.

Professor Dr. Kulovac concluded that technological advancements represent the future of surgery, particularly in urology. He emphasized that this success proves local doctors are fully prepared for highly advanced technological procedures, according to the official statement from KCUS.
