"There were as many filmworthy stories in Sarajevo as there were inhabitants," said journalist Vesna Andree - Zaimovic, who worked on the film ‘Kiss the Future’, a documentary about U2's 1997 concert in Bosnia’s capital.

‘Kiss the Future’, produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) on Sunday.

The film about the unbreakable connection between the legendary Irish band and Sarajevo explores the dangers of nationalism and the role of art as a weapon of resistance and activism. It contains footage of the band's concert which took place in Bosnia’s capital shortly after the end of the 1992-95 war.

Journalist Vesna Andree Zaimovic also took part in the world premiere and shared her impressions with N1 and commented on why the idea was attractive to Matt Damon.

“He recognizes social issues, those that have the potential to change society and can influence the widest audience through film art. This is exactly the reason why Matt Damon and Ben Affleck got behind this film. They supported the screenwriter and the director in their efforts to turn the story from wartime Sarajevo, which had not been told until now, into a documentary, which not only bears witness to a time but also has the artistic potential to affect the viewer, give them hope and a warm feeling,” she said.

Although she was hired for the film as a researcher who, together with the team, talked to more than a hundred people during the process, she also told her personal story told in the documentary.

“There were as many filmworthy stories in Sarajevo as there were inhabitants,” she said, explaining that she and her husband Senad Zaimovic shared an emotional story that even their children did not know about.

Members of U2 also attended the world premiere in Berlin and were delighted, she said.

“I was fascinated by the fact that when we met on the day of the premiere, they all knew our names and stories. They approached us, greeting us by name and what we are in the film. This means that they prepared for that day and let us know how important that story is to them,” she stated.

And it was similar with Matt Damon.

“He told us – you are so dear to me that I would hug you right now. I asked, what's the problem, give us a hug,” Andrea Zaimovic said, laughing.

A few days ago at the Berlinale, the entire team behind the film wanted to send a message that, unfortunately, the world does not learn from history.

“There were Ukrainian journalists at the press conference who were crying the whole time we were talking. We could only tell them – we know how you feel”, she said.
