The Minister of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zukan Helez, welcomed the announcement of Serbia’s Interior Minister, Ivica Dacic, who said that his country will not be sending policemen to several cities in BiH.

“In case of a violation of the General Framework Agreement for Peace, in such a way that armed members of the police of a foreign country enter the territory and the jurisdiction of BiH, I would request the intervention of the EUFOR commander and representatives of the NATO headquarters in Sarajevo. Also, the police agency for law enforcement in Bosnia and Herzegovina is competent to prevent the entry of foreign police formations,” Helez stated.

He said that the decision to send police officers from Serbia to BiH raised tensions in the relations between the two countries and that this is the right way to calm those tensions.

“The police cooperation of the states during the tourist season, during which states send their members to primarily help the tourists of the countries they come from, is completely normal and common cooperation between the two countries. On this and similar issues, one country cannot cooperate with the internal organization of another country, nor can the Republic of Serbia cooperate with the Bosnian entity of Republika Srpska (RS),” Helez argued.

He called on Dacic to establish police cooperation between two equal countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Serbia.

“The citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina are interested in establishing cooperation with the citizens of Serbia in all areas with a lot of mutual respect,” he added.

The news that Serbian police officers were to be deployed to Banjaluka, Foca and Trebinje caused outrage among some political parties in BiH, notably the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) and the Democratic Front (DF).

However, according to BiH’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Elmedin Konakovic, the agreement between the Council of Ministers of BiH and the Government of the Republic of Serbia on police cooperation was ratified during the earlier mandates of SDA leader Bakir Izetbegovic and DF leader Zeljko Komsic who were in the tripartite Presidency.
