The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nominees for this year's Oscars, scheduled for November 11. Among the contenders is The Man Who Couldn't Stay Silent, directed by Nebojsa Slijepcevic, marking the first-ever nomination of a Croatian film since the country’s independence, as reported by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC).

Story rooted in tragedy

The film tells the harrowing story of the murder of 20 non-Serb civilians in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its screenplay is based on true events from February 27, 1993, when armed members of the Army of Republika Srpska stopped a train travelling between Belgrade and Bar at Strpci, near Visegrad. They forcibly removed 20 passengers, 19 of whom were Muslim, and executed them before discarding their bodies into the Drina River.

The sole passenger who attempted to intervene was a retired officer, Toma Buzov, who became the 20th victim. In the film, Toma Buzov is portrayed by Dragan Micanovic. Other cast members include Alexis Manenti, Silvio Mumelas, Lara Nekic, and Priska Ugrina.

Awards leading to Oscar recognition

The Man Who Couldn't Stay Silent became eligible for an Oscar nomination after winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes and the Grand Prix at the Melbourne International Film Festival. The film has been showcased at over 80 festivals worldwide, including the Toronto International Film Festival, Stockholm Film Festival, and Manhattan Short.

Reacting to the nomination, director Nebojsa Slijepcevic expressed his joy:

“I am thrilled about the nomination, although it still feels surreal. I will probably grasp the full weight of our achievement once we pack our bags for Los Angeles. The incredible support from the film community has meant so much during this long Oscar campaign. I want to thank everyone who cheered for us, shared our film, and encouraged AMPAS voters to attend our screenings,” Slijepcevic said.

Produced by Antitalent, with Katarina Prpic and Danijel Pek as producers, the film stands as a powerful reminder of courage, tragedy, and the cost of silence in the face of injustice.
