US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended the United States men’s national football team following their 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup knock-out stage, saying that the sending-off of forward Folarin Balogun was unfair.

Balogun was shown a straight red card in the 64th minute after a VAR review for a foul on Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. He will now miss the match against Belgium due to the suspension.

"They got screwed with that red card. I wish - there needs to be an appeal process for that", Rubio told reporters during a brief statement at the White House.

The International Football Federation (FIFA) confirmed that under the current rules, an automatic suspension following a direct red card cannot be appealed.

Following the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, US head coach Mauricio Pochettino also criticised the referee’s decision, saying Balogun "never should have received a red card." He added that it would be fair to allow an appeals process, but if that is not possible, alternative solutions for the match against Belgium would need to be considered.

Balogun, who was born in New York, raised in England, and currently plays for Monaco, has scored three goals for the United States at this year’s World Cup, and his absence will represent a significant setback for the US team in the remainder of the tournament.
