Montenegro's Parliament on Thursday marked the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide for the first time, following the adoption of a resolution on June 17, 2021, affirming that genocide was committed in Srebrenica in July 1995 and condemning the public denial or minimization of the crime.

Opening the exhibitions "Stories from Srebrenica" and "Childhood in War: Drawings from Srebrenica'', Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Mirsad Nurkovic said that in July 1995 not only were innocent people killed, but confidence in international law, institutions responsible for protecting human lives, and the belief that Europe had learned the lessons of its history were also profoundly shaken.

Nurkovic is a member of the Bosniak Party, which is part of Montenegro's ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Milojko Spajic's Europe Now Movement. The coalition is also supported by the right-wing New Serb Democracy, led by Parliament Speaker Andrija Mandic, the Democrats, led by Deputy Prime Minister Aleksa Bečić, and several Albanian minority parties.

"Peace must never be taken for granted, and protecting human dignity is a daily responsibility for all of us," Nurkovic said, adding that Srebrenica must never happen again, to anyone, anywhere.

Montenegro's Minister of Justice Bojan Bozovic said that the Srebrenica genocide remains one of the deepest wounds in modern European history, recalling that international courts have unequivocally classified the crime as genocide.

"The culture of remembrance must be founded on respect for the truth and directed against crime, hatred, and the ideologies that led to the suffering of innocent people," Bozovic said.

In June 2021, Montenegro's Parliament adopted the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica, condemning the denial of the genocide committed in July 1995. In May 2024, Montenegro also voted in favor of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution establishing the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.
