Presidency member calls for adoption of law to protect victims of torture

Bosnia Presidency member Zeljko Komsic called on competent authorities to pass a law that would protect the victims of torture, assessing as “absurd” the fact that a state that aspires to become a European Union member state lacks such law.

Speaking on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, which is marked on June 26, Komsic said that all victims of the last war including the sexual violence victims, prisoners of war and all those who experienced any sort of inhuman or humiliating treatment, must get “adequate help, protection and compensation.”
“On this occasion, I urge all competent bodies, especially the Ministry of Human Rights of BiH and the Council of Ministers of BiH, to be actively involved in the adoption of laws at the state level, and not to leave the victims of torture on their own. It is a moral obligation of all of us. If we want to be part of the European Union, such legislation must be enforced,” said Komsic.
On 12 December 1997, by resolution 52/149, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 26 June the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, with a view to the total eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
