Ramiz Nukic, one of the survivors of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, best known as a returnee in the eastern Bosnian town of Bratunac, who collected mortal remains of the civilian victims of war, died on Tuesday at the age of 63.
Following the 1992-95 Bosnian war, Nukic and his family returned to their village in 2004. Ever since then until 2018, Nukic spent most of the time wandering through the woods and collecting the bones of the civilians who were killed during the war, finding hundreds of them.
As he often said, in this way he was helping the families of the killed Srebrenica people who have been searching for the remains of their loved ones for more than two decades.
“I returned with my family in 2004. I built a house. I had to do everything anew. Even before that, I started walking in the woods trying to find my father and brothers. There was some fear. It wasn't even safe. It was difficult when I started finding the bones. That's when I decided I would start collecting them,” said Nukic who then established cooperation with the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
