Mladic was hospitalised on Friday, 10 April, after falling suddenly ill. Despite his conviction for the most severe violations of international humanitarian law during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the Srebrenica genocide, he has remained in the custody of the international tribunal’s detention facilities.
Return to detention unit
Darko Mladic stated that while his father was transferred to a hospital for medical tests, he was returned to the detention unit on the same day. The family is currently awaiting official medical documentation from the tribunal's health services to gain insight into the exact diagnosis and any procedures performed.
"He most likely suffered a mild stroke. They promised to send the findings, but aside from an oral conversation with a doctor, we have not yet received anything concrete," Darko Mladic noted. He added that communication with his father is currently difficult and that his mobility is minimal.
Ratko Mladic has been held in the detention hospital in The Hague since 2024, where he continues to serve his life sentence.
