A three-day Energy Summit, bringing together key domestic, regional and international actors who will discuss reforms in Bosnia necessary for the country to transition to clean energy, has kicked off in the southern town of Neum on Wednesday.

The organisers of the Energy Summit in Bosnia and Herzegovina 2022 are the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Energy Sector Assistance Project (USAID EPA), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), as well as the EU Delegation to BiH, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the British Embassy Sarajevo.
“BiH leadership committed to global climate pledges, including obligations to advance its transition to clean energy and improve energy efficiency, which can lead to new investments and create jobs for BiH citizens,” US Ambassador, Michael J. Murphy, said at the summit.

“There is still a lot of work to be done here as well,” he said, adding that the US remains committed to supporting BiH’s energy sector.

“My hope is that today, the conference will jumpstart work that has been stalled for a bit too long,” he said.

UN Resident Coordinator in BiH, Ingrid Macdonald, noted that BiH has already made progress with the “ambitious nationally determined contributions from last year’s COP 26,” adding that the country pledged to cut greenhouse emissions by 30 percent by the year 2030, and 66 percent by 2050, compared to 1990.

She noted that BiH political leaders have pledged they will work towards the adoption of legislation that would enable the country to achieve these goals.

“As we face this code red for humanity, it is essential that we have concrete action now to draft and implement this critical legislation,” she said.
