Historic triumph: Bosnian Arabian horse officially recognized as distinct breed

A historic milestone has been reached for equestrianism in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following 134 years of organized and selective breeding within the country, the Bosnian Arabian horse has been officially recognized as a distinct breed. According to the Association of Breeders and Enthusiasts of the Bosnian Arabian Horse (UUBAK), this achievement secures a vital segment of the nation’s cultural, genetic, and historical heritage.

The breed developed through long-term selective breeding within Bosnia, mirroring the historical emergence of other renowned Arabian subtypes like the Polish, Russian, Egyptian, or Shagya Arabian horse. Generations of breeding shaped the specific traits, genetics, type, and characteristics that now define its unique identity.
This milestone required years of dedicated research, scientific analysis, and extensive documentation. Over the past seven years, an intensive process was conducted, involving the creation of scientific papers, DNA analyses adhering to top global standards, and collaboration with domestic and international experts in genetics, breeding, and veterinary medicine.
Crucial to this effort was UUBAK, whose international partnerships and active involvement within global networks laid the groundwork for official status. Today, the Bosnian Arabian horse is an associate member of the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO), confirming its breeding continuity and international standing.
Numerous enthusiasts, breeders, veterinarians, and researchers contributed to this historical success. The association highlighted Adnan Delic, who alongside his team and wife Nermina Spahija, led the initiative, supported by collaborators from Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Austria, Germany, Turkey, and beyond.
Beyond tradition, this recognition connects history, science, and culture, opening doors for future international collaboration, breeding development, sports, and youth education. UUBAK concluded that after more than a century, the Bosnian Arabian horse is finally recognized under its own name in its homeland.
