UK Ambassador: Media freedom in BiH under pressure on World Press Freedom Day

Freedom of information and fact-based journalism are under growing pressure in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Kingdom warned on World Press Freedom Day, marked globally on May 3.

In a statement, British Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Julian Reilly reaffirmed the UK’s support for independent media, while highlighting political and legislative challenges facing journalists across the country.
“The United Kingdom recognises that political pressure across Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to limit media freedom,” Reilly said.
He pointed in particular to developments in BiH's Republika Srpska (RS) entity, where authorities have introduced measures such as criminal defamation and “foreign agent” registration laws, which he said risk being used to suppress independent media.
He also warned of broader efforts to introduce legislation targeting so-called “fake news”, arguing that such provisions could be used to limit and silence alternative voices.
Despite these pressures, Reilly acknowledged the work of journalists who continue to provide objective and accurate information, often facing intimidation and political interference. He said such conditions undermine editorial independence and restrict the public’s access to impartial reporting.
“Free, independent and pluralistic media are not only fundamental to protecting democratic values, but also essential for promoting peace and empowering communities to make informed choices,” he said.
Referring to this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace”, the ambassador stressed that independent journalism is especially important in times when stability is under threat.
The UK stands in solidarity with journalists and media workers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, advocating for their safety and independence, Reilly added. He also underlined the importance of a properly funded public broadcaster and continued support for civil society to strengthen the media landscape.
“Journalists must have the freedom to investigate and report without fear, and the media must operate without undue influence,” he said, congratulating media workers on World Press Freedom Day.
