Bosnia's Presidency urged to find accommodation for migrants

Sarajevo municipalities asked the Bosnia's Presidency on Tuesday to secure accommodation capacities for migrants in some of the available barracks on Bosnian territory.

Heads of Sarajevo municipalities and representatives of cantonal ministries in charge of social policy, displaced persons and refugees held an urgent meeting on Tuesday, discussing the issue of increasing number of migrants in the Bosnian capital, who find temporary shelters in the streets, city parks and other spots across the city.

According to the Bosnian Border Police, the number of migrants passing through the country dramatically increased during the first few months of the year and the authorities already encountered problems with the lack of accommodation capacities for incoming migrants.

Head of Sarajevo Municipality Stari Grad Ibrahim Hadzibajric, who convened the meeting, said the talks resulted in conclusions which would be forwarded to the state Presidency. Besides the accommodation request, participants of the meeting also called for urgent registration of migrants.

Sarajevo Canton Police representatives pointed out the security aspect of this situation, assessing it as “very intense.”

“The information we have shows that the lowest number of migrants is coming from the areas affected by war, these are mostly the persons of Afro-Asian origin,” said police representative Nusret Selimovic.

According to the Border Police, more than 1,200 migrants were discovered in the attempt of or after entering Bosnia. Out of this number, some 400 illegal migrants were registered only in April, three times more than in January 2018.

Conclusions of the meeting will be forwarded to the state Presidency, the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Security. Turkish Embassy to Bosnia, whose representatives attended the meeting, said they would inform the Turkish Red Crescent and Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) about these conclusions and ask for assistance.
