Bosnia offers to send rescue teams to Croatia following devastating earthquake

Bosnia’s Security Ministry offered to send two rescue teams to Croatia to help the search for survivors after a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit the country on Tuesday, killing at least five people, injuring many others and causing devastation across central Croatia.

The epicentre of the quake was in the central Croatian town of Petrinja and was felt across the country, but also in neighbouring BiH. Rescue teams are still searching for survivors.

BiH’s Security Ministry offered to send two rescue teams to Petrinja, one from the country’s Federation (FBiH) entity and the other from its Republika Srpska (RS) entity.

Bosnia’s Red Cross also contacted the organisation’s branch in Croatia and offered to help. The Red Cross of BiH said that it will, together with branches of the organisation in Bosnia’s two semi-autonomous entities and the Brcko District, donate 80 tents, blankets and other necessary items to Croatia’s Red Cross.

The three members of Bosnia’sPresidency meanwhile expressed their condolences to Croatian President Zoran Milanovic.

“We are saddened by the news of the suffering of the citizens of the Republic of Croatia, especially the youngest, which makes the tragedy painful in the heart of every normal person. On this sad occasion, I would like to convey expressions of solidarity and readiness of all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina to offer every form of assistance and neighbourly support,” the Bosnian Croat Presidency member, Zeljko Komsic, said in his message.

“Dear President Milanovic, I received the news of the terrifying earthquake that hit Croatia and caused human casualties and material damage with deep sadness. I extend my sincere condolences to you and the grieving families, and I hope that the timely reaction of the rescue services will save all endangered people who are fighting for their lives. We are with you in thoughts and prayers,” his Bosniak colleague in the Presidency, Sefik Dzaferovic, said in his message.

“I would like to use this opportunity to express my condolences and support in overcoming this catastrophe that hit your country while you, like the rest of the world, were fighting the pandemic,” said the message from the Serb Presidenc member, Milorad Dodik.
