If the European Union accepts the imposing of changes to Bosnia's Election Law, that will mean that “the European path is over and Bosnia and Herzegovina is becoming a dark hole on the map of Europe,” Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, commenting on announcement of possible intervention by High Representative Christian Schmdit.

In his X post, Dodik said that the EU's stance towards Schmidt's intention to impose technical changes to electoral legislation will show how they treat Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“If they accept it as normal in BiH what none of them can even think about, it will clearly say that BiH is not a state but an experiment,” Dodik wrote.

He also asked why rush, concluding that it is either about “some big urgency, or some huge amounts of money,” not further explaining his conclusions.

Schmidt announced mid-December he would impose the Election Law changes if the political elites fail to do that in the upcoming period.

Commenting on the announcement, an EU spokesperson said that Brussels “took note” of it, recalling that the executive powers of the High Representative (Bonn Powers) should be used only as a measure of last resort against irreparable unlawful acts.”

As key priority identified in the Opinion on BiH’s membership application from 2019, he noted, “the EU expects Bosnia and Herzegovina to ensure that elections are conducted in line with European standards by implementing OSCE/ODIHR and relevant Venice Commission recommendations, and ensure transparency of political party financing.”
