The European Commission has officially appointed Marko Makovec as the new Principal Adviser for Reconciliation and Normalisation for the Western Balkans. This strategic role is housed within the Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST), the department responsible for guiding nations through the rigorous process of aligning with European Union standards as defined by the Treaty of European Union and the European Council. While the exact date for the commencement of his duties remains to be determined, his arrival marks a significant shift in the Commission's diplomatic focus for the region.

Makovec brings more than 25 years of professional experience to the position, characterized by an extensive background in enlargement policy, external relations, and regional stability. Throughout his career, he has navigated the complexities of international diplomacy, frequently managing high-profile policy dossiers and fostering consensus in politically sensitive environments. His expertise covers the entire spectrum of EU engagement, from political dialogue and negotiation to the management of human and institutional resources.

A Slovene national, Mr. Makovec transitions to this advisory role from his most recent position as Head of Cabinet to Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos. His deep institutional knowledge is further bolstered by his previous tenure as a Director at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

In that capacity, he oversaw relations involving the Western Balkans, Türkiye, the European Economic Area, and post-Brexit coordination with the United Kingdom. This appointment builds upon a long-standing career that began with senior roles in the Slovenian diplomatic service and the national government, providing him with a comprehensive foundation to address the ongoing challenges of reconciliation and normalization across the Western Balkans.
