The decision was made during a session of the electoral body of the Mostar Mufti office, which took place in the conference hall of the Karadjoz-Bey Medresa in Mostar. The body comprises assembly members, presidents of regional councils, chief imams from the Mostar Mufti area, and the director of the Karadjoz-Bey Medresa.
The session was chaired by Ibrahim Kapetanovic, the head of the Islamic Community Tomislavgrad-Duvno regional office. Kapetanovic noted that two other candidates were proposed during the session, which will be recorded in the minutes, but the electoral body ultimately gave its unanimous support to the candidacy of Mufti Dedovic. The nomination will now be forwarded to the competent organs of the Islamic Community in BiH as part of the ongoing electoral procedure.
The final election for the new Grand Mufti of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina is scheduled to take place on September 19, when the electoral body will cast votes for the candidates. Prior to this, on September 5, the Assembly of the Islamic Community must confirm the list of candidates who meet the requirements for the election. The incumbent Grand Mufti, Husein Kavazovic, who has held the office since 2012, is ineligible to run for a third term under the current regulations.
Mufti Salem Dedovic graduated from the General Department of the Faculty of Arabic Language at Al-Azhar University in Cairo and has served as the chief imam of the regional office of the Islamic Community of Mostar since September 1, 2006.
