Of all countries in the region, BiH sent the most rescuers to Turkey

Bosnia and Herzegovina has so far sent the largest number of rescuers to Turkey out of all the countries in the Western Balkans, numerous charity organisations collected a large amont of aid for the country and citizens keep leaving flowers in front of the Turkish Embassy in Sarajevo to honour the victims of the devastating earthquake.

Numerous countries have sent teams to help search and rescue efforts in Turkey, including those in the Western Balkans. Bosnia and Herzegovina has so far sent a total of 140 people, Albania 53, Serbia 45, Croatia 40, Kosovo 30 and Montenegro 15.

Members of the BiH Armed Forces left for Turkey on Friday, while teams from civil protection agencies in BiH’s two semi-autonomous entities are already at the scene and helped save a number of people from the ruins in areas affected by the earthquake.

Adi Vrabac, a member of the Sarajevo Canton Mountain Rescue Service, is among those engaged in the wider area of the Antakya district, in the city of Hatay, one of the areas most severely affected.

“The situation is difficult. The city of Hatay, where we are at the moment, has been literally destroyed. Those buildings that apparently remained intact are very weakened”, he told the Anadolu Agency.

“As for the location that was assigned to us, there were no survivors there so far,” he said, adding that he witnessed many “painful scenes” there.

“We often found parts, incomplete human bodies,” he said.

On Wednesday, the BiH Council of Ministers approved one million Bosnian Marks (BAM) from budget reserves to assist Turkey.

Meanwhile, organizations such as the “Pomozi.ba” Association, the “Merhamet” Muslim Charity Society, the Red Cross/Cross of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the EMMAUS International Solidarity Forum (MFS-EMMAUS), have so far collected hundreds of thousands of euros through transaction accounts to help the Turkish and Syrian people, as well as donations in the form of winter clothes, shoes, blankets and other necessities for citizens affected by earthquakes.

A Janaza funeral prayer was organised in mosques across the country as well and BiH’s Islamic Community urged the faithful to donate to the people of Turkey.
