Srebrenica associations condemn demands for Ratko Mladic release

Associations representing victims and witnesses of the genocide, alongside the Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Zepa movement, have strongly criticized recent public statements and demands from Serbian officials, led by President Aleksandar Vucic, calling for the release or medical treatment in Serbia of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic.

The associations emphasized that decisions made by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals are governed strictly by established legal and procedural frameworks rather than political appeals. Independent medical experts appointed by the court previously rejected defense requests for provisional release, confirming that Mladic receives continuous and specialized medical care within the United Hague detention unit and Dutch medical facilities.
Serving a life sentence for genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws or customs of war, Mladic faces the highest level of legal restriction regarding any modification of his detention status. The statement clarified that provisions for early release after serving two-thirds of a sentence apply solely to fixed-term imprisonments, whereas life sentences carry no such automatic eligibility unless the detention facility proves entirely incapable of providing proper treatment.
Concluding their public address, the associations directed a sharp critique toward Belgrade leadership, stating that international legal standards and judicial mechanisms operate entirely outside political initiatives.
