No officials spoke to the protesting teachers in Sarajevo

The protest teachers staged in Bosnia's capital on Wednesday came to an end without any local Government officials responding to their demands. The teachers demanded a pay rise.

Several hundred people gathered to protest for higher salaries for those working in the education sector in the Sarajevo Canton (KS). The teachers want their base pay to be raised from BAM 290 to BAM 330, a 14 percent increase.

The lowest salary for teachers in KS is currently BAM 1,070.

The teachers warned that, should their demand not be met, they will not be available for the first two classes on Monday morning.

They had also staged a protest in May this year, demanding an education reform.

Head of the Sarajevo Canton Primary Education Union, Saudin Sirvo, told N1 on Wednesday morning that the protest represents a ‘now or never’ opportunity for the teachers to express their dissatisfaction.

‘We have only one demand, stemming from our collective agreement, and that is a pay rise. The Cantonal budget had increased 25 percent, but teachers’ salaries were increased by only five percent,’ he said.
